Annotation

Solomon Khromchenko was born before the founding of the USSR and outlived it. However, the Soviet period was the peak of his creative activity, and it is not surprising that songs written by contemporary composers were immediately entering his repertoire. The singer had not only professional but also friendly relations with many authors, often became the first performer of their creations. For example, Solomon Khromchenko was the first to record Matvey Blanter’s most popular waltz “In the forest, by the frontline” – in 1942 he sang it for the soldiers of the Soviet army accompanied by Alexander Tsfasman’s Jazz orchestra.
Unfortunately, these recordings were not released as a separate disk, but they have been preserved! These songs, conventionally united under the common denominator “Soviet”, are very different – from purely patriotic to equally purely lyrical ones. But all of them are a reflection of a certain historical epoch, and that is how they should be perceived today.
